One of the central functions of each state is reuniting the owner with the unclaimed asset. Along with the legal requirements within each state, states continue to enhance owner location efforts through statewide outreach activities such as public appearances at shopping malls or fairs, public service announcements and unclaimed property programs on radio and television. In order to obtain current address matches, many states initiate computer matches with their respective Department of Revenue or Department of Motor Vehicles. Additionally, some states are able to receive current address information through contacts with various credit bureaus. These efforts result in a greater public awareness of the unclaimed property programs and result in an increasing percentage of unclaimed assets being returned to the rightful owner or heir. Claimants are encouraged to contact and work with each state, as claims processing is a public service to the owner. The continued emphasis on the interstate cooperation helps the claimant avoid time consuming and often confusing referrals. Click below
